Why We Built This
The idea for our point buy calculator came from a simple frustration. When the 2024 Player's Handbook changed how ability score bonuses work moving them from species to backgrounds most existing calculators didn't update. Players were getting wrong numbers from outdated tools, then showing up to session zero with characters that didn't follow the current rules.
We wanted a calculator that handled both the 2014 and 2024 rules correctly, worked instantly on a phone at the table, and explained the "why" behind the math instead of just spitting out numbers. Who Writes This Content
Hamza Ahmad is the founder and lead writer of Point Calculate. He created this site out of a frustration shared by countless players: assigning ability scores should be the fun part of making a character, not the confusing part. After seeing how many outdated tools still used the old rules and how easily new players got tripped up he set out to build a calculator that handles both the 2014 and 2024 Player's Handbook correctly and explains the reasoning behind the numbers.
